This view is from the deck of the Union ship “Kearsarge” as it sinks the Confederate raider “Alabama” off the coast of France on July 19, 1864.
The up close view of the sailors in action and the blood on the deck illustrate the effort and sacrifice required for victory. The captain of the English-built “Alabama” was Raphael Semmes whose ship had caused more damage to U.S. shipping than any other southern raider during the Civil War, capturing or sinking 62 ships.
